But this is fan service of the highest order. Obsidian gives viewers more reasons to like and sympathize with Marceline. Sure, the Adventure Time: Obsidian special could be called fan service. That shirt just so happens to be the shirt Bubblegum has said was special to her, and she also claims to have worn it all the time before trading it to Maja the Sky Witch in order to get Hambo, Marceline's childhood toy, back. After that, Marceline winks at her, and that's how everything began between the two. During the show, Marceline takes her shirt off, throws it into the crowd and Bubblegum catches it. But in the process of preventing the catastrophe the beast threatens to cause, she learns that fixing this dilemma means facing yet another part of her. At the very end of the special, one more flashback shows Bubblegum at a concert Marceline is performing in. When a dragon awakens and breaks free from its prison underneath the Glass Kingdom, Marceline is called upon to defeat it as she did centuries ago. Thankfully, not every glimpse into Marceline's past is negative. With the added context, viewers piece together this song is about what Marceline disliked about Bubblegum at the time, and it's also what led to their first breakup. Bubblegum got frustrated and told Marceline to leave because she couldn't focus, which led to Marceline getting upset and performing said song. Later on, another flashback shows how Marceline got on Bubblegum's nerves while she was trying to set up a force field. When they go to the Glass Kingdom to defeat the dragon, Larvo, Marceline performs a song that she wrote many years prior. For some time, fans have known they had a prior relationship, and they didn't get along for a while. The special also sheds more light on the relationship between Marceline and Princess Bubblegum. ![]() Marceline eventually found out her mother had died, which caused a lot of trust issues for her throughout her life. She didn't want to tell Marceline about this, so she sent her off on her own. Marceline was originally traveling with her mother, Elise, who was slowly dying. It's already been established that Marceline wandered the desert alone when she was young, but it wasn't always like this. ![]()
